INTERVIEW DAY

It was amazing to see how every role was crucial in conducting a successful interview. Some of us would be responsible for the audio, others making sure the camera was functioning correctly, and others took notes and made sure Myrna and her husband felt comfortable and welcomed. I was humbled to see that this production could never be done alone but only possible with the help of my team.

As a team, we were all hands on deck during production. My main role was helping out with the angle of the camera and also being the main interviewer.

A behind the scenes of setting up the mic for the interview. Thank you to Jenny for being in charge of the audio!

CREATIVE DIRECTION

It is one thing to plan out the angles and shots of a video project, however, it is a totally different thing to be inspired by the subject the documentary is about. I was inspired by Myrna’s sarcastic humor that made spending time with her enjoyable and I hoped that my documentary could not only tell the story of her journey but who she was as a person.

As we spent time with Myrna, we experienced her humor and personality which inspired the look and feel of the documentary.

We followed Myrna to her calligraphy class and captured some of the typical moments of her day. Here she greets her students who wait outside for her outside the classroom.

An inside scoop of her teaching. Special thanks to my teammate Bon for capturing these moments on camera!

takeaways

This was one of my first experiences being the person that drove an interview session. There was an immense level of preparation from thinking about how I would transition in-between questions and even thinking about the final product at the end. One thing I realized was that while trying to show my interest in the conversation, my voice messed up the audio in certain places. In the future, I would be more mindful of different methods that would facilitate genuine conversation without compromising the quality of production.

Something I learned from this project was how to keep the interviewee engaged and comfortable while not compromising the quality of our production.
